Melrose Is Back: Hello Again!
Our iconic pink shop in LA has had a little bit (OK, quite a big bit) of a makeover… but don’t worry – the Insta-famous #PinkWall is here to stay. Discover the grand reopening now.
If you’re not from LA, you might not realise that the Paul Smith shop on Melrose Avenue is something of a local celebrity. Thanks to its bold pink exterior, visitors flock to the shop hoping to take a #PinkWall selfie against the backdrop – so much so that it became dubbed “the most Instagrammable spot in LA”.
While designing the now-iconic shop back in 2005, Paul looked to Mexican modernist architecture for inspiration. The movement’s bold use of colour eventually informed the unmistakeable shade of pink that has made the building a beloved landmark.
Last year, we celebrated our unique Pink Wall with the 'Melrose, Unwrapped' project. A mesmerizing trompe l'oeil mural was meticulously hand-painted on the shop's side, offering a celebratory salute to our Signature Stripe. While the Pink Wall remained intact, it seemed as though it had been "unwrapped" to reveal its stripy core. This incredible artwork took six painstaking days to create, using 15 gallons of paint.
And if you've passed by the neighborhood recently, you may have noticed that we've been busy with yet another project – a makeover of the shop's interior. Extensive renovations have transformed the space, and we are eager to unveil our new look to you.
‘Our inspiration for this redesign came from the experimental architecture that shaped the LA landscape around the middle of the 20th century. The new shop layout features a comprehensive redesign with multi-purpose, adaptable spaces, sculptural shelving, and a blend of custom and vintage furniture.’
Now, we have dedicated sections for menswear, womenswear, and accessories. Plus, we've created a purpose-built lounge-like tailoring area, perfect for catering to the awards season crowd – because, after all, we're in Hollywood.
Perhaps most excitingly, the redesigned store will feature a dedicated invitation-only VIP fitting room with a separate garden entrance, and lounge area inside, which will be outfitted for private appointments in a space designed to recall mid-century style lounges. Vintage seating by Mario Bellini and French postmodern wall sconces finish out the exclusive space.
As always, the shop is adorned with original art, personally selected by Paul himself. You'll also find beautiful custom mosaics in travertine stone by Charlie Sheppard, who we recently hosted at our Albemarle shop for an inspiring exhibition.
