Chihuly In Music
In celebration of his exhibition at Paul Smith's Paris showroom, we share a playlist of the songs that echo through Chihuly's Hotshop in Seattle .
Eloquent, successive ribbons of icy blue and white spiral the panoramic waves of the Glacier Blue Persian Studio Edition, contributing a sense of vibrant and kinetic energy to the sculpture.
Drawing inspiration from Chihuly’s new Glass on Glass series and the delicate balance of the Ikebana form, Big Chill typifies the artist’s unrestrained drawing style.
The Saturn Yellow Basket Studio Edition captures Chihuly’s original vision for this body of work and incorporates his sensibility in grouping individual elements together to emphasize the visual experience.
Created using an 'intaglio' technique, which encompasses etching, engraving, aquatint, collagraph, drypoint, and other techniques.
The 2024 Jewelled Macchia Studio Edition begins as a clear, glass bubble. As this bubble is heated and shaped into its final form, layer upon layer of coloured glass chips are applied, each eclipsing another to create depth and contrast.
Broad sweeping motions delineate the expansive circumference of the Float form in Simply Red. Handwork of acrylic paint that shifts from white to gold is set against a crimson background while carmine and metallic gold dots pepper the interior to create a dazzling opulence.
The 2024 Blue Topaz Seaform Studio Edition reveals the glass medium’s ability to emit colour and light. The cool sky-blue outer edges of this two-piece composition gently stretch and fade into a counterbalancing interior of warm, radiant amber.
Sterling Floats offers a two-dimensional representation of this series in glass with each form defined by pewter and black acrylic paint. Vibrant red and yellow dots speckle the interiors providing energy and momentum as the two Floats ricochet across the field of view.
The Ivory Luster Basket Studio Edition – a strong statement in its simplicity – embodies the ephemeral, amorphous, and free-form attributes for which Chihuly’s forty-year-old Basket series is known.
Snowfall Baskets illustrates Chihuly’s exploration of translucency in his body of work titled Baskets. Poised against a pearlescent cream background, two Basket forms, one nestled within the other and boldly marked with black acrylic painted lines, provide an elegant expression of depth and connection.
