First introduced in 1969, the Caran d’Ache 849 pen – with its recognisable hexagonal design – is considered an absolute classic, winning fans all over the globe. Paul counts himself among them. In fact, he’s rarely without his, which he stashes in his suit pocket wherever he goes.

Our collaboration with the brand was built on that foundation and began when the company was celebrating its 100th anniversary. Now in its fourth edition, the latest Paul Smith + Caran d’Ache collection is a celebration of Paul’s love of colour and the joy of creativity.

Paul Smith

I consider a Caran d’Ache 849 pen a part of my everyday uniform – I always have one in my pocket ready to jot down a note or sketch,” Paul says. “This new collection is inspired by my love of colour and all their unexpected combinations.”

With a two-tone colour scheme – a graphic nod to Paul’s popular stripe motifs – each combination has been carefully chosen to contrast, clash or coordinate, reflecting Paul’s clever use of colour. Along with good looks, practicality was also front of mind, and so each style comes in a coordinating reusable tin, designed to be used as a pencil case or to store other knick knacks.
