*Metanote: clearly there will be those of you - like Edward, for example - who will find many of these tips beneath you or obvious or just too, well, spelt-out. But let me assure you that I have a lifetime of relations for whom it is impossible to spell things out too clearly. If you don't believe me, I will happily donate a few.
